FAMILY:
Mindy was born and raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Her mother died when she was young, and her father married Reva Shayne. Mindy was not fond of her step-mother growing up. When Mindy and Billy (now divorced from Reva) moved to Springfield, Billy met Vanessa Chamberlain and Mindy got a new step-mother she liked.

Mindy's family is quite large, led by her granddaddy, H.B. Lewis. Her grandmother, Miss Martha, passed away when she was a girl, but is fondly remembered. It was revealed in 1985 that Sally Gleason was Billy's natural mother, making her Mindy's grandmother. Mindy also has an Aunt Trish, Uncle Josh, brother Bill (Billy & Vanessa's son), cousins Marah and Shayne (by Josh & Reva), and cousin/half-brother Dylan (Billy & Reva). Reva never drifted far from the Lewises, going from Mindy's step-mother to step-grandmother to aunt.

Mindy staged an accident at the Country Club in the spring of 1983, by pretending to be thrown from Vanessa's horse, Boss. In 1984, she miscarried her baby to Phillip. She sufferend another miscarriage a few years later, after becoming pregnant with Roger Thorpe's child.

Mindy volunteered as a candy striper at Cedar's Hospital in 1983. While on the run in New York City, she worked as a waitress at Circus Underground and even performed by singing and playing piano. In 1985, she was a featured performer in Lujack's music video for "Out in the Streets." She won the title of Sampson Girl in 1986. She opened her own fashion design company, Melinda Lewis Designs in 1990.
