Rick's parents are Ed Bauer and Leslie Jackson. They got divorced shortly after his birth. Growing up, he formed a close bond with his paternal grandmother, Bert Bauer. As a teen, he went to Lincoln Prep and became best friends with Phillip.

In 1983, his father married Maureen Reardon. His half-sister, Michelle (Berta Michelle Ramsey Bauer), was born in 1985 (from Ed's one-night stand with Dr. Claire Ramsey.)

He has an uncle Mike, and a cousin, Hope, who was once married to Phillip's father, Alan. He also has cousins Johnny and Lanie Bauer.

Rick is now raising his son, Jude Cooper Bauer (born in 2001), with the mother, Harley Cooper.
